Topic Diagnostic and monitoring tool By jp72 Date 12-03-2007 07:16
Hi members,

I'm in the preliminary stage to design a diagnostic and monitoring tool for the C1.

Basically, it would be made of the following parts:
- Microchip PIC 16F7xx microcontroller
- MC33290 K-BUS interface
- RS232 plug to hook on a PC
- EEPROM memory (to store engine metrics?)
- 2x16 chars. LCD panel
- push buttons (to reset fault code?)
- led(s)
- a buzzer (warning signal?)
- a modified BMW part #61-13-2-306-793  to plug on diagnostic socket

Owerall cost should be under £100 (150EUR).

If you think it's a very ambitious project, you're right! :)

Don't hold your breath, it won't come out as fast as BoomBox FAS Mod ! (moreover I will move to a house in April)

The electronic design should not be a problem, the taff part is about hacking the K-LINE protocol, especially understand fault code management and engine metrics gathering.

FOR THIS I NEED YOUR HELP : ANYONE TO PROVIDE MODITEC C1 INSTALLATION CD ?

Thanks,

Jerome

There's an integrated thermal protection in poweramp IC, so there's no risk of meltdown.
Topic FAS amp improved! By jp72 Date 11-03-2007 06:39
That's great :)

Maybe to should bench it for let's say one hour to see how hot it get inside the box before integrating it into your C1 ?
Topic Replacing bumpers By jp72 Date 10-03-2007 18:00
what about making a plaster mould out of original foam part ?

An identical part could be made with that kind of process:
- cover the inner face of mould with a microwave film
- pour mould with expensive foam (foam spray)
- put on top the original iron part and align it
- let foam harden
- pull out the part from moulder

Thanks to microwave film, moulder is reusable.

That's a great idea. Moreover, balsa is very resistant when covered with fiberglass and epoxy... Then it could finaly be painted in black and look the same as the original 'tits'.
Topic Anyone fluent in French? By jp72 Date 08-03-2007 19:10
Hi Lawrie,

I've just given a fast glance at it, the translation seems accurate and written in a pretty good french.

Btw "boîtes à construire" is unusual and should be replaced by "kit de construction" IMO (see first page).

If you want I could read it through fully when I'll have freetime.

Jerome

Yes but unfortunately this legal requirement only applies for cars, not for motos.

Sure, any information is welcome for this project !

This is exactly what I saw before. :)

To hack the ECU protocol I need first to design a board able to communicate with K-LINE diagnostic plug. This should not be too hard...
The hard part is about the ECU protocol itself, it seems that GS911 team manage to decode fault code reading and acknowledgement, I need to do the same and if possible go beyond with engine parameters.

For this my strategy would be to build into my C1 a small stand-alone board able to listen and record K-LINE protocol datas.
This can be done using a MC33199 or MC33290, a PIC (embeded microcontroller) and some kind of flashrom...

Then I could go and happily pay BMW to do a Moditec test and if possible try to talk with the guy so he could show me all the features of his nice toy... back home I could the dump datas and start analyzing the protocol.

I think that GS911 could be interesting to validate this scenario :)

>> it may be that the GS911 guys don't wish to divulge any info to us!

Well that's a kind of trade secret :)

>> I have a few spare ECUs (125s) if you wish to borrow one for investigation.

That's a very kind offer :)
I will get back to you this summer after my moving and paypal you shipping cost.

Thank you!

I've read BMW original diagnostic tool (Moditec) is able to stream engine parameters through this plug...

Hi Dave,

In case you would change it, I could be interested by your faulty ECU for my little project (dashboard through diagnostic plug).

Thank you Marino.

You're right, at last I will have my own workshop downstairs!

I know you've got a kind of addiction with pictures, so here are some I took while visiting the future house :)

I'm thinking of starting a new project to read data through the ECU plug, I have in mind the raw design of the interface right now... More to come after the moving from my flat to a house...
Topic Roundabout? By jp72 Date 30-01-2007 09:01
The simple solution is to watch down the road when entering on either a giratory or a round-about, if you come across a dashed line, you let the priority otherwise you've got the priority :)
Topic Roundabout? By jp72 Date 30-01-2007 07:19
In France we have both !
Difference is that incomers have priority on Giratory Systems whereas incomers of roundabout must let the priority to insiders !
I think we like complicated things in my country ;)

No, just a 125cc version with its power limited through a specific ECU setup. In my memories this is specific to german market for young people (sixteenthsome).

First would be to get as much informations as possible about the diagnostic plug, signals and data exchange protocol used.
I previously found a site about F650GS ECU mods (same as C1) that could give us a lots of informations.
Topic FAS amp improved! By jp72 Date 25-01-2007 09:04
I know it was! :)

...but some jokes can lead to real things sometimes.

Moreover engine temperature is a know issue on C1 so that could be interesting to avoid messing with cooling system pipes to monitor it through the ECU :)

That's a great news, did my subscription yesterday :)
Topic FAS amp improved! By jp72 Date 25-01-2007 08:30
Well, by taking the following assumptions, it might be possible to design something:

- the goal is to have an integrated monitoring device not a garage diagnostic tool (already available with two handfuls of £)
- diagnostic socket is able to communicate in normal mode (ie while riding)
- accurate informations are available on ECU serial data protocol and signals
- identify interesting data to display from the ECU (RPM, temperature, speed, ...)
- a bunch of people are ready to help me assess and validate said assumptions

THEN a a LCD device using a PIC processor and some kind of interfacing circuit (I know, I'm very optimistic) could be design and integrated in the right compartment box.

Wow, what a challenge! :)
Have you guessed that my former job position was IT monitoring software expert ? I had to setup & customize software to display ANY fault on IT servers & then automatically fix it (a 2 weeks job)?
But now I'm a Project Manager and I'm supposed to have forgotten anything about technicals stuff! LOL
Topic FAS amp improved! By jp72 Date 24-01-2007 07:14
Well I think it's time for a review :-)

16 FAS replacement units were shipped:

- 4 x FAS V2.23 (first release 2x22w)
- 11 x FAS V3.00 aka BoomBox (second release 2x40w) including 3 upgrade kit from V2.23 to V3.00 and a special version with its own box and a DB15 plug.

10 units were DIY kits and 6 were full upgrade kit.

Shipment were spread to the following country:
- 7 in UK
- 2 in USA
- 2 in Italy
- 2 in Portugal
- 1 in Greece
- 1 in Belgium
- 1 in France :-(

Now I'm doing my own PCB with an UV insulator and PCB burner to reduce production delays :-)

I also made a test workbench out of a recycled chassis female plug, HPs and switches.

However full upgrade kits are done at a my own pace, when my family allow me some free time (an Italian guy is actually waiting to place its order for a full upgrade).

Went back to the train station this afternoon with the same passenger...

Less pleasant for both as it was raining and a "French demonstration" threw a real mess on Paris roads : car jamed everywhere making filtering between a real pain.

For sure my F-I-L would have missed his train if we had to get there by car, worth the red-flashy puncho he had to put on :)

Hi team,

This morning I had to get my father in law at the train station in Paris. This was perfect conditions for me to have a "2nd class" passenger :)

People were quite surprised of this unusual C1 configuration !

Despite extra weight and some balancing all went OK.

Topic Cheap FAS mod to disable automatic volume with full power ! By jp72 Date 10-12-2006 19:45
Hi fellows !

I talk recently with a german guy about FAS and he gave me that simpe trick to disable automatic volume control *** without *** power loss !!!

Am I shooting a bullet in my own feet ? No because I think this is an interesting alternative for those who can't justify a Boombox and moreover this mod won't solve the 'flat sound' issue on the original FAS amp.

Instructions :

1) Disable automatic volume control
Find the « M » connectors located near the right rear shock (1), those  reroute throttle signal to the amp. Disconnect both plugs to restore the original setup (see picture B). Now automatic volume control is disabled but as a result the FAS is working at half its power.

2) Restore full power
Find on the « M » connectors the wire that originately route throttle signal to the amp and connect it to +12 V.
The nearest +12V source is located on belt connectors switch. (you know, the switch that prevent you to start when your seatbelts are not fastened...).

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Jerome
